3rd Annual Merck Symposium
Merck Speaker: About the Lecture: The synthesis of a new chemical entities (NCE’s) in the Pharmaceutical Industry takes on average 8 chemical transformations and has developed an increased complexity of chemistry over the last few years, with the identification of more complex heterocyclics that contain an increased number of chiral centers. Each NCE generally has at least one step within the synthesis that requires a catalytic transformation. This lecture will focus on how a catalysis group functions within a Chemistry Research Organization to screen and identify the optimal ligand, catalyst and reaction conditions to perform the catalytic step. The presentation will highlight our efforts on the identification of optimal reaction conditions to perform a 1,4-conjugate addition reaction in a highly enantioselective and regioselective manner. Development of new ligands to perform the Suzuki reaction will also be described. Finally, due to the growing importance of metal catalyzed reactions within process chemistry an approach to identifying a method to remove the transition metal to meet the stringent purity requirements defined by the FDA will be outlined. About Faul: Faul received her B.Sc. degree in 1986 and her M.Sc. degree 1987 from University College Dublin, Ireland. She then moved to the US where she received her Ph.D. degree in 1992 from Harvard University under the direction of Professor David Evans on research towards “The development of an asymmetric copper catalyzed aziridination reaction,” Upon receiving her Ph.D. Faul joined the Chemical Process group at Eli Lilly in 1993. In 2003 she moved to Amgen where she helped to build the Process Chemistry Organization. Faul's areas of expertise reside in chemical process research and development, final form determination and catalysis. Faul currently manages a team of scientists within both process chemistry and catalysis who are responsible for the clinical development of compounds in the areas of inflammation, neuroscience, metabolic disorders and oncology. Faul has built an international reputation with more than 70 patents and publications, including numerous scientific presentations. About the Merck Symposium:
