Chemistry Seminar Program

Student Hosted Colloquium

Friday, May 4th
Professor Krzysztof Matyjaszewski
"Adopting best organic reactions to polymer chemistry. “Clicking” from ATRA to ATRP"
Matyjaszewski
4:15pm - 5:15pm
Braun Lecture Hall
S.G.Mudd Chemistry Building
Stanford University

This seminar is free and open to the public. All Stanford University Chemistry students are encouraged to attend this special event.

About the seminar:
Successful polymerization requires very selective repetitive propagation reaction. Some of them are so called “click” reactions, including 2+3 polar cycloaddition, metathesis and ionic ring opening processes, or atom transfer radical addition (ATRA). Copper-based ATRA has been successfully extended to ATRP (atom transfer radical polymerization) and is among most efficient controlled radical polymerization systems. ATRP is based on reversible halogen atom transfer from dormant alkyl halides to transition metal complexes with the intermediate radicals capable of propagation. Recently, amount of Cu catalyst was successfully reduced to ppm level ATRP of styrenes, (meth)acrylates, acrylamides and other vinyl monomers provides polymers with predetermined molecular weights in a large range 200>Mn>20,000,000 and with low polydispersities (1.05
About Matyjaszewski:
Prof. Matyjaszewski was born in Poland and received his Ph.D. at the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1976 under the direction of Prof. S. Penczek. Following post-doctoral work at the University of Florida, he held Research Associate appointments with the Polish Academy of Sciences and the University of Paris, France. In 1985 he moved to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, where he is currently University Professor and J.C. Warner Professor of Natural Sciences. Prof. Matyjaszewski is well known for the discovery of Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization, which is currently being commercialized in the US, Europe, and Japan. He has published over 700 papers and 10 books, and holds 31 US and 79 international patents. Notable awards for his work include: 2007 Hermann F. Mark Senior Scholar Award; 2004 ACS Award for Cooperative Research in Polymer Science; 2004 Prize of the Foundation of Polish Science; 2002 ACS Award in Polymer Chemistry; and the 1999 Humboldt Award for Senior US Scientists.
