Deutch's lecture at the Johnson Symposium:
"Chemistry - Opportunities and Needs - revisiting an old idea"

In 1965, a National Research Council committee, chaired by Frank Westheimer, issued a report assessing the status and need of basic chemistry research in the United States. The report was largely successful in its plea for more federal money and hence it has been widely imitated by many other such "studies." The Westheimer report also prompted an uncharacteristic and welcome self examination of where the field of chemistry should be going. I will argue that Chemistry needs to take sharply different directions in both research and education to make the contribution it should to improving society.
