Managing an Effective Job Search
ACS Career Workshop with Dr. James Burke

All Stanford Chemistry students are encouraged to attend this special American Chemical Society Career Management and Development workshop. Managing an Effective Job Search is a great program for anyone interested in a career in Chemistry. Dr. Burke will discuss the major components of job searching: targeting the job market, networking, resume preparation, and interviewing.

Registration:
This event is being sponsored by the Stanford Department of Chemistry. Although there is no cost of the event, for planning purposes please RSVP by August 22nd. Light breakfast snacks will be served with a break at 10:30am.

Attention: Ph.D. Candidates going through the 2007 recruiting season.
Resume reviews will be conducted on Monday, August 27th and Tuesday, August 28th. Appointments are approximately 30 minutes and are only open to those going through recruiting this year. Attendance at the workshop is a pre-requisite. Please bring a copy of your resume. Contact Patricia Dwyer at 723-4770 for an appointment with Dr. Burke to review your resume and discuss personal career management.

About Dr. James Burke:
Before his retirement from Rohm and Haas Company in 2001, Dr. James Burke was Manager of Technical Recruiting and University Relations, with responsibility for scientific and engineering recruiting for the company's U.S. locations. He also managed the company's university relations program and helped to coordinate its other external technical relations programs. Besides working in synthesis and product development research laboratories, he had accumulated over 25 years of experience in recruiting and career development programs. He has given about 300 lectures on these and related topics at various colleges and universities, college placement conferences, and ACS meetings.

A past Chair of the Philadelphia Section ACS, Dr. Burke is a member of the ACS Board of Directors. He chairs the Society Committee on Budget and Finance, and is also a member of the ACS Board Executive Committee, Planning Committee, and Professional & Member Relations Committee, as well as various task forces. He is an ACS Career Consultant and is active in his ACS local section. He has been the chair of the ACS Council Committee on Economic and Professional Affairs and the ACS Council Committee on Local Section Activities. He received the ACS Henry A. Hill Award in 2000 and the National Association of Colleges and Employers 2001 Employer of the Year Award.

Dr. Burke received his B.S. degree in Chemistry at Spring Hill College in 1961 and his Ph.D. degree in Organic Chemistry in 1965 at the University of California at Berkeley, where he was a NSF Predoctoral Fellow. Before joining Rohm and Haas as a Senior Research Scientist, he was a NIH Postdoctoral Fellow at Columbia University. He resides with his wife Barbara in Glenside, PA. They have four children.
