February 21, 2006 Moerner in the News Moerner's single-molecular spectroscopy research was recently featured in an article in InterAction, Stanford's quarterly publication on multidisciplinary research and education. In the article entitled, The Grants that Make Research Possible, Moerner discusses the advantages of cross-disciplinary research and the positive effect that multidisciplinary funding has for collaboration and the advancement of science. In Moerner's case, close collaboration with Lucy Shapiro (biologist), Harley McAdams (physicist) and Robert Twieg of Kent State University allow him to measure molecules made by Twieg, while Shapiro and McAdams study the behavior of these molecules in bacteria. Although there are advantages to cross disciplinary research, the coordination of research, funding and reporting can be extremely difficult. Please click here for more information.
