Thank you for your interest in the Department of Chemistry at Stanford. This web site has been prepared to give prospective graduate students an introduction to our Department and to Stanford in general. Feel free to contact any of the faculty members to find out more about their research programs or other aspects of at Stanford. I think you will find that they share my enthusiasm for our Department and for the quality of our research program and teaching.

Application Process

Applications are accepted from candidates who intend to pursue the Ph.D. degree; we do not have a Master's degree program. You can submit your application on-line and pay by credit card. The web-based application allows a person to save the entry and return to the application several times to edit before submitting it. The application fee is $125 for U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and international applicants. Applications from women and minority candidates are encouraged.

Our on-line application deadline is December 15, 2009 for a fall quarter 2010 start; however, supporting materials (i.e., three letters of recommendation, official GRE scores including the subject exam in chemistry, and official transcripts from each university you have attended for one year of longer) are expected to arrive no later than January 15, 2010.

It is recommended that applicants take the general GRE exams in autumn or earlier. The required GRE subject exam in chemistry may be taken in October or November. There is also a TOEFL requirement for foreign applicants who have not studied in an English speaking country for at least two years leading to a BS or MS degree. Applicants will be notified of the Department's decision as soon as possible after all supporting materials have been received, and in no instance later than March 15. Applicants receiving offers of admission must notify the Department of their decision to accept or decline the offer by April 15.
