Information for Prospective Biology Majors
Many students often ask why they cannot take the Bio Core until sophomore year. The main reason for this is so that you have room in your freshman year schedule for required courses, such as PWR and IHUM, but also because students need to take prerequisite courses, such as Chemistry, before starting the Bio Core.
That being said, there are still some Biology courses that freshmen are welcome to take, should there be an interest, and room in the schedule:
- BIO 1 – Human Evolution & Environment, 3 units
With no prerequisites, this is a great class for freshman to take! It explores how people interact with their environments from ancient times to current events. This course is typically offered in Spring quarter.
- BIO 3 – Frontiers in Marine Biology, 2 units
This course is led by three faculty members from Hopkins Marine Station. Covers the diversity of marine environments, and is perfect for freshmen with an interest, but no prior course work in marine biology. Includes a field trip to Hopkins in Monterey, CA! This course is generally offered every Autumn quarter.
- BIO 20 – Introduction to Brain and Behavior, 3 units
Without any prerequisites, this is a great introductory course for students wishing to study biology through exploration of neural information and brain behavior. This course is generally offered every other year, during Autumn quarter.
Additionally, freshmen are highly encouraged to explore our freshman seminar course offerings, which can be found on the Stanford Introductory Seminars page.
