Undergraduate Minor

Effective January 1, 2008 the name of the department changed from Biological Sciences to Biology. All students that declared the minor after 1/1/08 will be Biology minors.

The undergraduate minor is intended for students who have an interest in biology, and would like to study it with some direction. For a complete list of general Biology minor requirements, please visit our section of the Bulletin.

Please note that you cannot “double count” courses between your major and minor.

Documents and Forms:

Minor Checklist - form to be used to assist students with planning their minor coursework
Approved Out-Of-Department Electives - list of non-BIO courses that can be used toward the Biology minor requirements (providing they have been approved for at least 3 units and are taken for a letter grade)

Steps for declaring the Biology Minor

  1. Students must submit an academic plan, a list of courses they plan to take in order to fulfill the minor requirements in Biology online through AXESS. This must be done no later than two quarters prior to the conferral of the undergraduate degree.
  2. Once a student has submitted the academic plan online, the department receives it and reviews it to verify it's compliance with the minor requirements.
  3. Decisions on minor declarations will be sent to students via e-mail no later than two weeks after their form is reviewed. Please do not contact the department earlier than two weeks regarding a pending minor declaration.
  4. The Registrar's Office will be notified with the department's decision and the student record will be updated. If you have received notice from the department, but your student record does not reflect the minor declaration, please contact Student Services at (650)723-1826.
  5. Denied minor declarations will be returned to the student with comments. Students whose minor declaration is denied may resubmit their declaration once they have made any necessary changes or corrections.
