Postdoctoral Fellow, Stanford University

Stanford University will be holding a John E. Sawyer Seminar on the Comparative Study of Cultures, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, during the 2010-2011 academic year. The seminar, “Gender Bias in the Past and Future of Asia,” will focus on the increasingly unbalanced sex ratio of China’s population, with comparisons to male-biased populations in late imperial China and in present-day India.

We plan to appoint a postdoctoral fellow interested in comparing China and India with respect to gender bias, marriage, migration, and demography, preferably with research experience in two of these topics. The fellow will collaborate with faculty on Chinese survey data that addresses these issues, and contribute to joint publications on comparison to India. (Chinese language ability is helpful but not necessary.) The fellow will also help to coordinate the seminar, attend all seminar sessions, and give occasional presentations in the seminar.

The fellowship carries a nine-month stipend of approximately $39,000. Fellows are required to be in residence in the Stanford area from September 15, 2010 through June 14, 2011. Applicants must have received their Ph.D. no earlier than September 1, 2005, and have completed all degree requirements by the September 1, 2010. U.S. citizenship is not required.
