ThemeThe theme of the 2005 CIES conference is Beyond Dichotomies. The theme is meant to stimulate thought about the meaning of the many oppositions that academics create to discuss theory and practice. A typical methodological opposition, for example, is qualitative analysis versus quantitative analysis. There is substance to the dichotomy, yet both qualitative and quantitative analysis are subject to the same standards of scientific enquiry. Should they be cast in opposition? The CIES meeting will try to take on this question, as well as a number of other popular dichotomies, such as Globalization versus Localism, Government versus Non-Government, Theory versus Practice, and Traditional versus Non-traditional Education. We hope that participants will think of other dichotomies in proposing panels and paper presentations. We hope that you will help us create a meeting that raises new questions in comparative and international education. This is a time of great ferment and enormous interest in our field. We need to push the envelope in 2005. Be imaginative in your proposals, and be timely! |
