Invitation to Alumni Reunion:

August 14, 2004

Dear SIDEC/ICE alumni:

In 2005, the Comparative and International Education Society will have its annual meeting at Stanford University. The meeting, to be held March 22-26, 2005, is taking place twenty years after the CIES met here in 1985. The theme of the meeting is "Beyond Dichotomies," which means that we will be trying to move beyond many of the ideas that have pervaded international education in the 20th century to redefine our work in this new millennium.

Because we will be highlighting comparative and international education at Stanford for almost a week, we thought we would use the occasion to bring together the alumni of the greatest comparative and international education program in the world. We would like to hold this reunion the two days before the CIES meeting, beginning on Sunday evening, March 20th and ending on Tuesday morning, March 22.

The reunion will be a wonderful opportunity for SIDEC/ICE alumni to see their friends and network with other generations. We are planning to put together several panels with representative alumni from government, international organizations, and academia. The panels could discuss how our alumni have done their work, how the issues facing them have changed over the years, and how their experience at Stanford may have helped them deal with these issues. We should also be reflecting on what our varied careers say about the state of ICE and how we see future needs in comparative and development education. The University is highlighting Stanford's international programs this year 2004-2005, so this is a great opportunity to demonstrate how a small, quality program can have worldwide impact.

We hope that you will make every effort to get here and make the SIDEC/ICE alumni reunion an unforgettable occasion.

We will be posting further news about the reunion at our website.

See you soon,

Martin Carnoy
Professor of Education and Economics
