Job Opening at East Palo Alto H.S.

Below is a position announcement for teachers at East Palo Alto High School.
This new charter high school was opened in September 2001 in Ravenswood Elementary School District as a collaboration between the Stanford University School of Education and Aspire Public Schools, a non-profit organization that has created a number of charter schools throughout California. EPAHS is the first public high school to operate in East Palo Alto community in 25 years since Ravenswood High School was closed as part of a desegregation order.

The school was launched with 80 9th grade students and will add a grade level each year, ultimately serving about 320 students in grades 9-12. (Next year there will be about 240 students in grades 9-11.) Open to all students in the community by lottery, it features a project based curriculum tied to standards and performance assessments focused on college preparatory academics and the students interests. Students will have opportunities to study in college courses, on-line, and through community service and internships with local businesses and organizations. Teachers work in teams that share a common group of students for two years.

Teaching excellence is at the center of the schools design. All teachers in the school are National Board Certified or will pursue Board Certification within five years. The school also serves as a professional development school for Stanfords Teacher Education Program (STEP) collaborating in the development of state-of-the-art practice, teacher training, and research. There is ongoing collaboration between Stanford professors, researchers, and the high school staff. The school also receives support from Aspire Public Schools, the sponsoring organization that is responsible for its operations and offers curriculum and organizational supports.
