I've found some news item about Jane Doe, and I want to determine if she's the same Jane Doe as the one in our records. How do I do that?
The answer is to match on details mentioned in the article. If the article provides Jane Doe's career history, then look for a match in present and past employment (EMPT screen). You can also try to match on family member names, if mentioned in the article.
Matching just on location, or on name alone, is risky. Even if it's an unusual name. Every researcher has stories about two people with the same unusual name living in the same small city. True, in those cases there is sometimes a family connection (father/son, etc.), but you can't count on that. Also remember that a mismatch, once it becomes part of the record, becomes very hard to undo.
