The forms that are of interest to development research are the one which detail an individual's stake in the company. Those forms include the annual proxy statement (DEF-14A, etc.), or the company's initial prospectus (403-B) and registration (S-1). These forms generally list the stock holdings of top management, directors and those who own 10% or more of the company. Certain individuals at those firms also file Forms 3, 4 & 5 which detail their stock ownership and trades. It's important to note that not everyone at a publicly listed company is required to post their stock holdings. Also, by definition, stock ownership information is simply not available for those at privately held firms.

US News & World Report revealed what it takes to be “rich” in 40 of the largest metro areas in the United States. The magazine calculated the average incomes of the top 5 percent in each city and estimated what would constitute a "rich" income for a couple with no kids, and for a family of four, in each scenario:

PeekYou is a people search that currently claims to have 143,839,270 profiles online. You can search by name, by work or by school attended.

While it can't really make up its mind if it's a social interaction site or a business profile search, PeekYou does have a number of useful features. One is "Possible Relatives," with a list of those sharing the same last name and present or past location.

PeekYou has a lot in common with other people-search sites with a business bent, including LinkedIn, ZoomInfo, and Spoke. Similar sites that are more geared towards social interaction are of course MySpace and Facebook.

It's sometimes easier to see relationships with a visual tool. TheyRule.net was one of the first, but several good (and free) ones have surfaced. Here are a few such websites:

Muckety takes a few seconds for Java to load, but it's worth it. The link above is to the Stanford Muckety map, but you can enter other organizations or individuals, or click on a name within the map to see relationships past and present.

In Muckety, if you end up clicking on a lot of the boxes and it expands way too much, you can "center" or clean it up by alt-clicking on a box. Mousing over a line will provide details of the relationship (director, trustee, family ties, etc).

NNDB Mapper tracks the activities of noteworthy individuals, and lists birth information, political affiliation, family, high school and college education, board memberships as well as career history information. At the bottom of each profile is a link to a relationship map.
