Areas of Interest
Post-colonial and African Diaspora Studies

As productive as focusing on difference can be, and has been, in thinking about issues of belonging and identity, I am interested in exploring a shared sense of belonging, which leads to a shared identity. In order to do so I turn to the idea of travel. Central to my thesis is the idea that the country is a well-traveled space and that those who inhabit it, in addition to being marked by race, ethnicity, nation, gender and class, are also marked by travel. My work enters ongoing conversations within African Diaspora critical-thought and Post-Colonial Studies that chart out ways of belonging that move beyond race, or rather, beyond the essentialist notions of race that are seen as providing too limiting a basis on which to establish belonging.
