My dissertation focuses on history and memory in contemporary black popular culture examining how black women artists assemble alternative futures from black popular culture and history. I bring together theory from the fields of cultural memory, visual culture, rhetoric, performance, feminist and queer studies to analyze popular culture artifacts such as rock posters, book covers, popular music and black science fiction literature.
