Its Executive Director is Steven D. Carter, Professor of Asian Languages at Stanford University, and the Committee's administrative affairs are handled by the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University. The Center Director is Dr. Kenneth Butler (Ph.D. 1964, Harvard; Far Eastern Languages). Dr. Butler served as Director 1967-77, 1995-01, and returned to the Center in 2003. The staff includes nine full-time, experienced Japanese teachers who have prepared the Center's teaching materials and developed innovative methods of language instruction, and a comparable number of part-time instructors. Inter-University Center BoardThe Inter-University Board meets annually to act on policy questions, appoint or reappoint the director, review the annual budget, and consider other questions of importance to the proper functioning of the Center.
