The Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies is the premier American program for the teaching of advanced Japanese. First established in Tokyo in 1963, the Center now resides in Yokohama. The Center is governed by an Inter-University Committee of scholars representing 16 universities with strong, established graduate programs in Japanese studies.

For more than 40 years, the Center has been dedicated to providing advanced language training to more than 1400 leading scholars, government officials, and business men and women. Many graduates occupy positions of leadership in their respective disciplines and professions.

All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply. Admissions are made without regard to gender, race, ethnicity, age, sexual preference, disability, or religious affiliation.
