Program Requirements
The honors program in Ethics in Society is open to majors in
every field and may be taken in addition to a department major.
Students should apply for entry at the end of Spring Quarter
of the sophomore year or no later than at the beginning of the
Autumn Quarter of the junior year. Applicants should have a
cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.3 or higher. They
should also maintain this minimum average in the courses taken
to satisfy the requirements.
Requirements
- ETHICSOC 20 (same as PHIL 20) Introduction to Moral Theory,
OR ETHICSOC 170 (same as PHIL 170) Ethical Theory. This
is normally taken in the sophomore year.*
- ETHICSOC 30 (same as POLISCI 3) Introduction to Political
Philosophy, OR ETHICSOC 171 (same as PHIL 171). This is
normally taken in the sophomore year.*
- ETHICSOC 77 (same as PHIL 77) The Ethics of Social Decisions.
Ethics in Society honors students must enroll under Ethics
in Society. This course is usually taken in the junior year,
upon admission to the honors program.
- One 4 or 5 unit undergraduate course on a subject approved
by the honors advisor, designed to encourage students to
explore those issues in Ethics in Society that are of particular
interest to them. Courses of relevance to the Program in
Ethics in Society are offered by members of the program
committee and by other departments. Students may also take
a course with their honors thesis in mind. To promote a
broad interdisciplinary approach, this elective should normally
be outside the Department of Philosophy.
- ETHICSOC 190 Honors Seminar (same as PHIL 178). Ethics
in Society honors students must enroll under Ethics in Society.
- ETHICSOC 200A, B Honors Thesis. Students write a thesis
on a subject approved by their honors advisor, 8-10 units,
with work spread over two quarters.
**You must take either ETHICSOC 170 or ETHICSOC 171 (i.e., you
must take ETHICSOC 20 or ETHICSOC 30 at the 100 level).

Sophomore year (prior to admission to the honors program)
ETHICSOC 20 or ETHICSOC 170
ETHICSOC 30 or ETHICSOC 171
Junior year (upon admission to the honors program)
ETHICSOC 190 -- taken in the Winter Quarter
ETHICSOC 77 -- taken in the Spring Quarter
1 ethics- or thesis-related 4 or 5 unit class -- taken at
any time during
junior year
Senior year
1 ethics- or thesis-related 4 or 5 unit class if it wasn't completed
in junior
year -- taken in the Autumn Quarter
ETHICSOC 200 A, B -- the honors thesis is normally written during
the Autumn and Winter Quarters.
Note: Courses taken to fulfill the EIS Honors
Requirement may be double counted for philosophy and other majors.
(EIS minors may not double count courses.)
