Everyone in the Stanford Community is required to take some safety training. However, it’s not always clear what training they need to take.
Print out and complete any and all of the "Training Advisor" documents below that relate to you, then read the paragraph below on "Tier III" training.
A. General Safety For All Staff -- this Training Advisor document is designed to identify required safety training for Stanford staff , faculty and students. ALL Stanford employees must complete this document.
B. EH&S Training Advisor for Laboratory Employees and Support Staff -- this Training Advisor document is designed to identify required safety training for Stanford staff , faculty and students who work in or around laboratories. If you work in or around laboratories, you must complete both this document AND the "General Safety for All Staff" document.
C. Supplemental Environmental Health & Safety Training Advisor for Non-Laboratory Staff -- this Training Advisor document is designed to identify required safety training for Stanford staff , faculty and students who work in industrial shops, trade occupations or construction. If you work in an industrial shop, trade occupations or construction, you must complete both this document AND the "General Safety for All Staff" document.
The Three Tiers of Training at Stanford University:
There are three "tiers" of training at Stanford University.
Tier I - Very General
- Offered by Human Resources at New Employee Orientation regarding
health and safety policies and procedures at Stanford.
Tier II - More Specific
- Offered by Schools and Departments in conjunction with EH&S
for training topics pertaining to a work area's activities.
Tiers I and II are covered in the training advisor documents given above. Tier III training is in addition to the training covered in those advisor documents:
Tier III -
Most Specific - This is the responsibility of Supervisors, Managers,
Faculty, and Principal Investigators on specific hazards in the
work unit or lab.
Supervisors, Managers, and Principal Investigators
must provide Tier III health and safety training on hazards specific
to the job site, equipment used, experimental procedures, etc. Supervisors,
Managers, and Principal Investigators may contact EH&S for assistance
in developing and reviewing their local Tier III training. Please
