ANSWERS

I tried to launch the course from STARS but it didn't open. Do I need any special plug-ins to take Safetytrain online courses?

1. Turn off your Pop-Up Blocker.

First, look under the "Tools" menu in your browser, and ensure that your browser's "Pop Up Blocker" is turned off. In Firefox, uncheck the box in Tools/Content that says "Block pop-up windows". In MS Explorer, look under Tools/Pop-Up Blocker. The prompt you want to see is to "Turn On Pop-Up Blocker" which means it is currently turned off. You want it off, so leave it as is. If it offers you the choice "Turn Off Pop-Up Blocker" then select that, and turn it off.

2. Check to see that you have any necessary plug-ins.

Most online courses require only plugins that most browsers already have: Flash Player or Adobe Reader . Click either of these if you don't have them.

The Ergonomics online course requires an Authorware plugin.

There is additional information on the Ergonomics course and this plugin below.

Some videos require RealPlayer. Click here for the free RealPlayer plugin.

If you need a Quicktime player, click here.

Some courses are actually MS Word or PowerPoint documents. To view them, you will need the appropriate application running on your computer (MS Word or PowerPoint).

I'm having trouble launching EHS-3400 "Ergonomics: Computer Workstation" from STARS. Anything special I should  be doing?

EHS-3400 requires an Authorware Plug-in from Adobe.

You can download one at http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/

Scroll to the bottom of that screen to see the Authorware Player options.

If you are running the program on a Macintosh, download the "Installer Complete(3)" version.

If you are trying to run the Ergonomics online course on a Macintosh with an Intel CPU, you will need to run your browser in "Rosetta" mode when you download and install the plug-in, as well as when you launch the course.

Here's how:

If you are running the program on an Intel-based Mac, you will need to run your browser in "Rosetta" mode. Here are the instructions for setting your browser to run in Rosetta:

BEFORE downloading the Authorware Plug-in, Close Safari (or whichever browser you're using). Then:

1. Go to the Applications folder
2. If you're using Safari, <ctrl>+click the " Safari.app" icon. (If you're using another browser, click the .app icon for the browser you're using).
3. Click "Get Info"
4. Check the box to the left of "Open using Rosetta" .

Close it all up. Now you can Relaunch Safari (or whichever browser you're using) and it should work. You can now download the correct Authorware plugin at the above given above.

Now when you download the plugin from the Adobe site given above...it may not open. This is because as of OS X, Apple no longer distributes a little "unpacking" program called "Stuffit Expander". So you have one additional step: you need to download and launch Stuffit Expander.

You can download Stuffit Expander free from: http://my.smithmicro.com/mac/stuffitexpander/index.html

Once you've loaded it on your system, you'll be able to load the Authorware player by double clicking the Authorware .sit file on you've already downloaded onto your desktop.

------------

Adobe provides a URL to test whether the Authorware Player has been installed correctly:

http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/authorwareonly.html

Generally speaking, if that URL works then the ErgoTrain course will work.

The course won't run on Windows Vista.

There have been times when the program just won't run on a given computer. In those cases, please try and find another computer to try the course on. Lane Library has a computer set up for taking EHS courses, just ask at the front desk as you walk in..

You can also take a live ergonomics training (Please see STARS for details). Department trainings can be arranged by contacting EH&S at 6-4392.

I'm trying to register for a course in STARS, but I get lost in all the links. How do I launch the course?

Send an email to rbedgar@stanford.edu with your name and phone number. Robert will get back to you to set up a time to walk you through the process.

I'm using a Macintosh and can't launch an online RealNetworks video using. What do I need to do?

We've noticed differences in behaviors from different Macintoshes (PowerPCs vs Intel Macs). But click on the job aid and follow the steps it gives and you should be fine:

Steps for Viewing Realnetworks videos on a Macintosh

That should do it. If you have any other problems with not being able to open or play a course or a page in a course, contact rbedgar@stanford.edu.

I want to take a course but the system says"a duplicate enrollment has been found" and won't launch it. What should I do?

  1. Go to http:/axess.stanford.edu
  2. Click the Training tab at the top.
  3. Click the "My Learning" link in the upper left of the page.
  4. You should find the course listed under "My Learning Activities". If not, click the "All My Learning" link at the lower left of your screen.
  5. Find the course by title. Its status should be listed as "In-Progress".
  6. In the far right column for the title, there should be a "Launch" button. Click that. The course should open.

My STARS records say "in progress", but I completed the course and passed the test.

All records for online safety courses here at Stanford are initially saved in the EH&S Online Safety Training Database. Once a week, the records are sent to STARS in order to update the STARS database.

Please give two weeks after successfully completing an online safety course before expecting to see your record updated in STARS. If, after that time, your STARS record is not updated, contact Robert Edgar at rbedgar@stanford.edu.
