2010 Emergency Evacuation Drill
On October 7th, Stanford University will conduct an earthquake response drill for the entire Stanford campus community. The drill will simulate the immediate response and evacuation procedures that you would use for an earthquake for all university organizations. At the direction from the Provost, the exact time of the exercise will not be announced but the drill will take place during business hours on Thursday, the 7th of October.
Exercise objectives
- To educate the campus community about earthquake response procedures
- To practice building evacuation processes and Emergency Assembly Point coordination
- To practice staff and student accountability procedures
- To educate the student community about emergency procedures
- To encourage units to improve local emergency response plans and procedures
- To determine a baseline for the campus emergency data collection process

Did You Hear The Siren?
After the drill on Thursday, ONLY IF YOU WERE ON-CAMPUS AND OUTSIDE WHEN THE SIREN SOUNDED, click here to provide us with feedback. Your comments are very much apprecited.
Drill Activation
The drill will begin with the activation of the AlertSU Outdoor Warning System. At that time, all campus residents should Duck, Cover and Hold On until the siren ceases (approximately 45 seconds).
After the siren stops, all individuals should evacuate their area and report to the nearest Emergency Assembly Point to check in.

A representative from the EAP should then report the check-in status and any other important information about their building or area to their local Department Operations Center (DOC). A list of docs and their locations can be found at the following link.

An Excel file containing DOC contact information is here.
For most participants, the exercise will end thirty minutes after it starts when the campus outdoor warning system signals an end to the exercise. You may return to normal operations if you have completed the check-in and reporting process.
During the exercise or any real emergency, instructors are expected to take charge of their classroom and instruct their students in the proper emergency response procedures.
Before the exercise:
Familiarize yourself with emergency evacuation routes and the location of Emergency Assembly Points for your facility. Inform class members about exit doors, evacuation routes and the location of Emergency Assembly Points.
During the exercise on October 7th, when you hear the campus siren system:
- Instruct your students to Duck, Cover and Hold on until the siren stops
- Instruct students to collect their belongings and prepare to evacuate the facility
- Escort class members to the local Emergency Assembly Point for the building
- Ensure that all members of the class were able to evacuate the building safely
- For small classes (< 50 students), go through the process of accounting for all students at the EAP
- For large classes (> 50 students), students will need to check in as they respond to the AlertSU message
Approximately 30 minutes after the exercise starts, the campus outdoor warning system will signal an end to the exercise. Classes and other activities may resume their normal schedule at that point.
All students will receive a voice message from the AlertSU system requesting them to respond to check in and verify their status for the drill. Please respond to the AlertSU message when you receive it. This will help validate the system as a verification service.
In addition to responding to the AlertSU message:
If you are in your residence, Duck, Cover & Hold On and then evacuate to your local EAP and check in with your residence staff.
If you are in class, Duck, Cover and Hold On and then follow the instructions of your instructor as you evacuate with your class to your local EAP.
If you are anywhere else on campus inside a building, Duck, Cover and Hold On and then evacuate with the rest of the population and check in with someone at the local EAP.
If you are off-campus, respond to the AlertSU message. That is all you need to do.
If you are outdoors, during a real earthquake, you would want to move away from anything tall to avoid falling objects and then report in at your campus residence or follow the instructions you have been given to check in with the university. For this exercise, please respond to the AlertSU message to register your location.
All post-docs will receive a voice message from the AlertSU system requesting them to respond to check in and verify their status for the drill. Please respond to the AlertSU message when you receive it. This will help validate the system as a verification service.
In addition to responding to the AlertSU message:

If you are in class, Duck, Cover and Hold On and then follow the instructions of your instructor as you evacuate with your class to your local EAP.
If you are working in a lab or other location on campus, Duck, Cover and Hold On and then follow your local emergency plans to evacuate the facility and report to your local EAP to check-in.
