Use of Human Subjects in Research

Course Introduction

General

Stanford is committed to assuring that all of its research activities involving human subjects are conducted in a way that promotes the rights and welfare of subjects.

Upon completion of this module, you should understand that:

  • The Stanford Federalwide Assurance of Protection for Human Subjects (FWA) contains policies and procedures for protecting the rights and welfare of human subjects. It authorizes Stanford to submit grant proposals for federal funding. Without it, Stanford would not be eligible to apply for federal funding.

  • There are important historical, legal, and ethical foundations for the Stanford FWA.

  • The Stanford Research Compliance Office is available to help you understand and comply with the requirements of the FWA.
