FAQs about CITI Training for IRB Members

Q.  What are the steps I have to take to begin the course?

  1. Go to http://www.citiprogram.org or click on the required tutorial button at the left frame on the Research Compliance website http://humansubjects.stanford.edu
  2. Register for the course.  Your SUNet ID is not used—you create a user name and a password for this purpose.
  3. Select your group as either Medical IRB member or Non-medical IRB member.
  4. You have to take the modules in order, rather than being able to skip around.
  5. You have to score 80% to pass.  Retaking any module (until you pass) is OK.

Q:  I am an investigator as well as an IRB member.  Can I take the Investigators Modules instead?

A: No, you should take the IRB member modules.  You will NOT have to take the Investigators Modules, since you will have completed the necessary items already.  If you submit a protocol in the next two years, you are all set for indicating that you have completed the necessary training.

Q:  In the past, I took the required tutorial that was posted on the Human Subjects website, from the Research Compliance Office.  As an IRB member, can I take the Refresher Module instead?

A: No, you should take the IRB member modules.

Q:  What if I forget my username or password?

A.  If you forget your username/password, go to http://www.citiprogram.org/emaillogin.asp and give them your email address.  The response from CITI is almost instant to your email account.

Q:  What are the topics in CITI?

A.  Topics that you will benefit from knowing, such as a review of essential concepts about informed consent, vulnerable populations, and history and ethical principles.

Q:  Does the IRB Chair have to complete more CITI modules than IRB members?

A:  No, the requirement is the same for both groups.

Q.  What is our deadline for the 2005-2006 IRB year?

A:  We would like to see all members complete their modules by November 15, 2005.
