Web-based Survey

Unlike "research practica" (where the goal is to provide training in research methods), the project assigned in this honors class is classified as "research." The students will employ systematic data collection with the intent of contributing to generalizable knowledge. The project also involves human subjects, although participants will not be asked to identify themselves.

Which of the following is the best course of action for the class?

  1. Select an appropriate random sample from the Stanford directory and send them each an email with the instructions for completing the survey form.

  2. Select an appropriate random sample and send them an email requesting their consent to participate in the study.

  3. Don't use the web, but instead develop a paper survey form to be distributed to a randomly-selected sample, completed anonymously and returned in a pre-addressed envelope.

  4. Develop a protocol describing the project and submit it to the Nonmedical Human Subjects Panel requesting expedited review.

This case study continues with a brief analysis of each of these options.
