RESOURCE CONSERVATION

Housing Energy Conservation Center

795 Escondido Road
725-6226

Students are encouraged to participate in ongoing energy conservation, water conservation, and recycling efforts at Stanford. Please limit use of large electric appliances and report problems with heat or power. Bathroom fixtures in student residences are equipped with low-flow devices; please do not tamper with these fixtures. Any leaks should be reported immediately.

Aluminum, glass, newspaper, and #1 and #2 plastics are collected in specially marked bins around campus residences. Cardboard should be placed in specially marked dumpsters adjacent to trash dumpsters. To recycle motor oil and #3 and #4 plastics, please contact PSSI at 321-4236. There are also recycling centers located on campus next to the fire station (Stanford Recycling Center, 723-0919) and at the east end of Embarcadero Road in Palo Alto (Palo Alto Recycling Center, 496-5910). See http://www.city.palo-alto.ca.us/recycle for information on Junk Mail Reduction Kits, what can be recycled where, and other recycling questions.

Students are not permitted to connect water hoses to building faucets to wash vehicles, since our storm drains flow to the bay. Please use local car washes; coupons are regularly included with other neighborhood coupons mailed to area residents, or can often be found on the back of Safeway supermarket receipts.

The Guide to Environmentally Sound Living at Stanford offers additional information about conservation and recycling efforts at Stanford, and is available at residence offices.
