The Vaden Health Center on Campus Drive is open all year to serve the health needs of registered Stanford students (holders of current student identification cards) and their spouses or domestic partners. Vaden provides comprehensive on-site health care, although referrals may be made for some health concerns. Vaden offers services in Four areas: Medical Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, Health Promotion and Health Insurance. The Vaden pharmacy provides on-campus access to prescription medication, as well as reasonably priced over-the-counter drugs.

   Medical Services
    498-2336 (8-2336) extension 1

The Medical Services staff, which includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and nurses, provides most services for diagnosis and treatment at no cost to registered students. Primary Care also offers many specialized services, including women's care, immunizations, allergy care, lab tests, x-rays, and physical therapy. Sports medicine is available on site by referral. Other specialty services (with referral) are available through Stanford Hospital and Clinic, and Menlo Clinic.

For the best service, please call the number above for an appointment. Same-day appointments are available. From mid-September through mid-June (except during breaks), Vaden is open for care from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. every weekday and from 10:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. on weekends and some holidays. Please see our website - http://vaden.stanford.edu - for altered hours during winter and spring breaks. After regular hours and on weekends, a physician and a member of the psychological staff are always on call for problems requiring immediate attention.

The Vaden Center also sponsors programs to address health concerns on campus. The Sexual Health Peer Resource Center, located at Vaden, is staffed by students trained to provide information on sexually transmitted diseases, birth control, and human sexuality in general. Registered Stanford students with valid Stanford ID cards can pick up 10 free condoms per academic quarter from the SHPRC. See the resource center's website (http://www.stanford.edu/group/SHPRC) for more information on these and other services.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is a resource for any personal concerns or other difficulties you may have while at Stanford. CAPS provides:

  • 24-hour availability for urgent clinical matters and emergencies
  • Short-term psychological counseling for individuals or couples
  • Medication evaluation and management for students working with a therapist at CAPS
  • Support groups for students with body image concerns, procrastination, relationship issues and depression.

Male, female, Chicano/Latino, African-American, Asian-American, and lesbian or gay counselors are available upon request. There is no fee for an initial evaluation or short-term counseling. Counseling and Psychological Services strictly protects the confidentiality of information shared during sessions; see http://vaden.stanford.edu/caps/confiden.html for full details.

CAPS staff is also available for formal and informal talks on topics such as procrastination, shyness, depression, stress, and conflict resolution. When requesting an appointment you need not disclose the reason. Simply state that you want an appointment with a CAPS counselor. You will be offered the first appointment available. If it is urgent and you want to see a counselor the same day, let us know. A CAPS counselor is always accessible for urgent situations, including during evenings and weekends.

If you have any suggestions or concerns regarding your experience at CAPS or how CAPS may better serve students, please contact Alejandro Martinez at 725-4120 or e-mail him at A.MARTINEZ@STANFORD.EDU.

YWCA Sexual Assault Center at Stanford
   725-9555

The YWCA Sexual Assault Center at Stanford is Stanford University's official office for responding to incidents of sexual assault. The Center is the product of a partnership between Stanford University and the YWCA Rape Crisis Center of Silicon Valley, working together to provide response and prevention programs related to sexual assault, dating violence, domestic abuse and stalking.

Highly trained advocates meet with and assist survivors regarding their options for responding to a sexual assault. They help coordinate easy access to a wide range of existing campus services related to the aftermath of an assault, such as medical assistance, law enforcement, legal and judicial services, and emotional/spiritual support.

The Center provides direct access via a dedicated 24-hour telephone line (650)725-9955 and offers drop-in and appointment office hours, Monday through Thursday, 2 - 4 PM.

   Health Insurance
   723-2135
    http://cardinalcare.stanford.edu

Stanford requires all students to have health insurance coverage. This requirement may be satisfied during registration by purchase of the student health insurance plan ("Cardinal Care") or completion of a waiver online through Axess at http://axess.stanford.edu. Students seeking a waiver must provide the name and policy number of their current insurance carrier. A brochure detailing the student health insurance plan for students is sent to all students during the spring; information about Cardinal Care can also be found at the Cardinal Care website.

Graduate students with assistantship appointments or those receiving at least $1000 per quarter in stipend payments (not including tuition payments) will be eligible for a subsidy to pay part of their Cardinal Care insurance premium.
