s an engineering student at Stanford in Fred Terman's era, I have long admired his work and the pace he set for graduate studies in engineering. The strong relationships he created between the few local technology firms and the faculty and graduate students were a prime factor in the development of Silicon Valley. Such relationships remain a strong force in its continuous success. One major element has changed, however, as much of the federal funding for graduate research has been cut, and our country has shifted from government to private funding in many areas.
The Stanford Graduate Fellowships program is a way to ensure that Stanford remains at the top of graduate education in the sciences and engineering. Many people have already made important contributions to the program, but more support is still needed. I hope you will join us in supporting this vital program.
