Fattaey and Price win 2011 Marsh O'Neill Awards

The Marsh O'Neill Award for 2011 will be presented to Heideh Fattaey, executive director of operations and programs at Bio-X, and Bettye Price, administrative services manager of the Biology Department. This annual award recognizes excellence in the support of Stanford's research mission.

Gravity Probe B confirms two Einstein theories
Stanford and NASA researchers have confirmed two predictions of Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, concluding one of the space agency's longest-running projects. Known as Gravity Probe B, the experiment used ultra-precise gyroscopes in a satellite to measure the geodetic effect (the warping of space and time around a gravitational body), and frame-dragging (the amount a spinning object pulls space and time with it as it rotates).

Precourt Energy Efficiency Center awards faculty research grants
Stanford's Precourt Energy Efficiency Center (PEEC) has awarded three grants totaling nearly $400,000 to faculty who will investigate the reduction of energy used by buildings. Awards were made to faculty in Mechanical and Civil Engineering, Economics and the Graduate School of Business.
Association of American Universities comments on US export controls
The AAU's Export Controls Task Force issued a statement on August 31 commending the Obama administration's approach to export control reforms. This Task Force is led by Stanford President John Hennessy. See also Stanford University Export Controls site.
