Observational Study

Important Points in this Case Study

Observing and photographing people in public places does not necessarily require IRB review. However, if the observation is part of a proposed research project, it must be approved by a Human Subjects Panel.

Projects involving observations in private homes, or in places where an individual would ordinarily expect privacy, would always require Panel review and approval, and may require consent.

As always, if you are not sure whether a proposed project requires a Panel review for human subjects protection, contact the Research Compliance Office.
