STANFORD
UNIVERSITY

OFFICE OF THE VICE PROVOST
AND DEAN OF RESEARCH

In his address to the graduating class of 1902, David Starr Jordan, the first President of Stanford University, offered his vision for Stanford -- a vision that is as meaningful more than a century later:

"A true University is not a collection of colleges. It is not a cluster of professional schools. It is the association of scholars. It is the institution from which in every direction blazes the light of original research."

These interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary units play a critical role in the research initiatives identified within the Stanford Challenge.
