Literature and Its Horizons focused on the paradoxical character of literature, by which it asserts its distinctiveness from other modes of language or social activity while simultaneously pushing toward those extra-literary dimensions. In November 2004, the group sponsored an international conference, Germany After the Dictatorships: Totalitarianism and its Consequences. Chairs: Russell Berman, Charitini Douvaldzi, and Amir Eshel.

Literature and Philosophy brought together scholars in both disciplines with the primary aim of establishing and advancing a new Program in Philosophical and Literary Thought at Stanford. Chairs: R. Lanier Anderson, Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht, and Joshua Landy.

Literature, Philosophy, and Commerce in Europe and the Americas, 1750-1900 hosted a reading group followed by an international conference in April 2005. Chairs: Richard Rosa, Lúcia Sá, and Arthur Strum.

The Orthodoxy Reading Group brought together graduate students and faculty from various departments across Stanford University, including Slavic, History, and Art History, for discussion of Orthodoxy and its impact in their respective fields. The ORG was co-sponsored by the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (CREEES) and hosted an international conference in March 2005.

Poetry, Poetology, and Poetics group members read and discussed selected works of interlinguistic studies of poetry and prose; the project also sponsored a lecture series featuring leading international scholars in poetry, poetics, linguistics, translation, and musicology. Chair: Lazar Fleishman.

Visuality and Literacy investigated the relationships among the visual arts, theater, and literature in the culture of modernity. The group studied performance and body language in numerous formats, including a conference, an exhibit of avant-garde books and posters, a multimedia poetry performance, an avant-garde theater workshop, and the performance of an experimental play. Chairs: Oksana Bulgakowa and Monika Greenleaf.
