Born in Fukuoka, Japan, grew up in Tokyo, Sapporo, and Saitama. Went to Hokkaido University to enjoy wider space and clean air. Came to the US in 1993 to see the wider world. Back in Tokyo in 2001. Taught English and comparative literature at Meiji University and Kinki University. Commuted back and forth between Tokyo and Osaka for four years by the Shinkansen bullet train. Back in US in 2008 to pursue a doctoral degree at Stanford. He wrote a doctoral dissertation on Nakagami Kenji and his use of music. In June 2012, he received a Ph.D. in Japanese literature.
