lit suggestions for some project presentations
Here are some lit suggestions based on last week's project presentations....I better get them off my chest before I leave:
For Jessica:
Mari Jo Buhle, "Feminism and Its Discontents: A Century of Struggle with Psychoanalysis."
http://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog/BUHFEM.html
What makes this book interesting for your project (at least the first part; it starts with Freud's visit to the U.S. in 1909), is the tracing of the convergence of two modern movements: psychoanalysis and feminism. Buhle (a women's historian) shows how Freud was received in the U.S. and how psychoanalysis became Americanized.
For James:
Apropos Madame Butterfly. Mari Yoshihara's (a fellow Americanist) book "Embracing the East" starts with an interesting analysis (gender/race framework) of MB. And a 60's Hollywood comedy based on it, with Shirley McLain and Yves Montand: "My Geisha." I love teaching this film...you will get a kick out of it.
Speaking of Yoshihara, for all you musicologists: she just published a really interesting book on classical music and Asians and Asian Americans: "Musicians from a Different Shore: Asians and Asian Americans in Classical Music."

For Fred
Here is a different spin on California and nostalgia, but I think you might find this interesting:
Robert G. Lee, "Orientals: Asian Americans in Popular Culture" (the chapter on "The 'Heathen Chinee' on God's Free Soil"
Best,
Susanne
