In preparation for my presentation today, I've attached a short piece by Lu Xun on translation. The translation is my own, incomplete and riddled with errors, but it should get the point across. I will discuss this piece in conversation with four other, similar essays by Lu Xun, my translations of which are even more embarrassing than the attached. All five essays treat similar themes, though with different emphases.

In preparation for our discussion of "Sealed Off" tomorrow, and in light of our discussion of the universality of urban modernism today, I thought that Zhang Ailing's brief piece "My Writing" might be of interest. You can find it in Kirk Denton's anthology Modern Chinese Literary Thought, or in the attached PDF.
Here are some potential discussion questions for our meeting this afternoon.
1. How do the various characters perform modernism? In the text, is modernism the condition of urban life, or is it the product of conscious action?
2. What is the status of open space within Shanghai? Why does the text oppose urban space to the rural?
