There is a book on film versions of Carmen, Carmen on Film: A Cultural History, which looks pretty good. Here's a review:

Dear James,
I will mention this during our discussion today, but wanted to post some links for you. Doris Dorrie (umlaut on the o) is a German filmmaker who has been staging operas over the past 8 years or so. I saw her Cosi fan tutte in Berlin and it was great.
