Part I: The Face on the Firewood
The painting of icons, or holy pictures, was the first art that Russia made her own. Viewers see how the purely religious tradition of the icon soared toward abstraction in Russia, influencing the birth of modern art in the early 1900s, and then helped legitimize secular political power in the Soviet era.

The program also explores the novel, especially the extraordinary achievement of writer Nikolai Gogol.

The program then introduces Sergei Eisenstein, the film director and brilliant innovator, who united all forms of Russian art into the new icon of film. Here Comes the Eighth Day
This is a video devoted to the chaos that exists in Russia today after the fall of Communism as a viable social system. The semi-religous, semi-capitalistic, totally bureaucratic replacement of Communism that exists under the constant protests of many of the Communist faithful make a visit to the local mental institution seem almost sane in comparison. One of the mental patients tells us he "was a good sailor but the ship went to the wrong destination". Another mental patient wants to sell his skeleton when he dies. When asked how much he wants for his skeleton, he tells the interviewer "I've never sold it before so I trust you to pay a fair price". This video is a fascinating look at Russia's populace who can agree there are problems with the government and the economy but are worlds apart as to what the solution to the problems are. While there are continued attempts at a consensus, one hundred-foot statues of Lenin are kept free of bird droppings. (50 minutes) RU1056

Volume III: From Czars to Commissars: A Museum Survives

When Nicholas II succumbed to the people's revolution and Lenin rose to power, the Hermitage became the world's largest museum, increased by thousands of works previously held in private collectionsStalin, Leninís successor, sold many of the museum's irreplaceable treasures for cash. Yet, the hermitage survived Stalin as well as World War II, when two thirds of its collection were transported safely out of Leningrad before the Nazi siege.
