Financial Aid

Students interested in the Master's Degree program in East Asian Studies may apply for the following types of support (contingent upon availability) at the time of their initial application for admission. Eligibility varies

For Both US and International Students:

·         Financial Aid from Stanford University.Check "yes" on the application form. You will then be considered for the following fellowships: Japan Studies (full tuition) or Chinese Studies (full tuition).

For US Citizens and Permanent Residents:

·         Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships (full tuition and stipend ). You must apply separately; for more information, click here .

·         Federal Work Study. File a FAFSA and supplementary form with the Financial Aid Office financialaid@stanford.edu (The FWS program offers part-time employment, with eligibility based on need) Also tell the department you wish to apply for work study.

Many Stanford graduate students hold fellowships from outside sources. Applicants to Stanford programs are encouraged to apply for such fellowships. Information should be obtained from the organization concerned or from the applicant's current academic institution. NOTE: Applications for financial aid are considered independently of applications for admission. A request for support does not affect the applicant's chances of admission.

Fellowships Administered by CEAS

For students studying East Asia in all departments at Stanford University, the Center for East Asian Studies offers a limited number of student awards for summer research, language training, dissertation research or write-up, travel grants, and post-docs.

I. Awards for Undergraduate Students

·         Undergraduate Fellowships for Language Study in China, Japan, and Korea: The Center for East Asian Studies is pleased to offer a fellowship program for language study in East Asia. We will offer three academic year and nine summer fellowships to support Stanford undergraduates to study Chinese, Japanese, or Korean in Asia. These language fellowships must be used for a full-time language study program in China, Japan, or Korea which is on the Department of Asian Languages list of approved programs. Preference is given to students who are majors or minors in East Asian Studies and to those who have taken a minimum of two East Asian Studies courses. Pick up applications from CEAS office (Bldg. 50, Rm. 51P). Deadline: Friday February 11, 2005.

·         Summer Internship Program in East Asia: The Center for East Asian Studies is pleased to announce a new fellowship program to support Stanford undergraduates in internships in China, Japan, and Korea. The purpose of the internship program is to provide highly-qualified Stanford undergraduates an opportunity to tie classroom learning on East Asia with real world experiences in East Asia. Students will gain practical experience in international or local corporate, media, non-profit, educational, or government organizations. Applicants must have at least second-year competency in the relevant Asian language before starting their summer internship. Preference is given to students who are majors or minors in East Asian Studies, and those who have taken relevant East Asian Studies courses. Students must take at least one East Asian Studies background course on their country of internship before the internship begins. Pick up applications from CEAS office (Bldg. 50, Rm. 51P). Deadline: Friday February 11, 2005.

·         CEAS supplementary grants for fieldwork in East Asia for undergraduates. The Undergraduate Research Opportunities program has funds available for undergraduate research projects. Click here, to find out more.

·         Fellowship to attend the Japan-America Student Conference. One award (maximum $2000) every year to fund a student delegate from Stanford to attend the annual Japan-America Student Conference. For more information on JASC, click here . Deadline: TBA.

II. Awards for Graduate Students

·         FLAS Academic Year Fellowships. Provides tuition and stipend for students in M.A. or Ph.D. programs who plan to do work in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean language and area studies. U.S. citizens and permanent residents only. For more information, click here . Deadline: Friday January 14, 2005.

·         Summer FLAS Fellowships. Provides tuition and stipend for students in M.A. or Ph.D. programs who plan to undertake intensive advanced language study in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean during the summer quarter. ·         Summer Internship Program in East Asia: The Center for East Asian Studies is pleased to offer a fellowship program to support Stanford East Asian Studies MA candidates in internships in China, Japan, and Korea. Similar to the undergraduate internship program, graduate students will gain practical experience in international or local corporate, media, non-profit, educational, or government organizations. Applicants must have competency in the relevant Asian language before starting their summer internship, as well as relevant academic or work experience. Pick up applications from CEAS office (Bldg. 50, Rm. 51P). Deadline: Friday February 11, 2005.

·         CEAS Summer Grants. Provides tuition and stipend for students in M.A. and Ph.D. programs for academically related summer work such as formal language training or course work required for a graduate degree, dissertaion research, or dissertation write-up. Both U.S. and international students are eligible to apply. Stanford graduate school enrollment is required. For applications, click here. Deadline: Monday January 24, 2005.

  • Fellowship for the Study of Women in Asia. One fellowship ($5000) awarded each year for a graduate student at Stanford to do dissertation research or write-up on women in Asia. Both US and international students are eligible to apply. Deadline: Friday January 14, 2005.

·         Travel Grants for Graduate Students. 8 travel grants ($500 each, 4 for the China field and 4 for the Japan field) for Stanford graduate students to present papers at major academic conferences. Letters of invitation and/or acceptance of your paper, an abstract, as well as additional information regarding the conference are required. Both US and international students are eligible to apply. Deadline: November 15 for Winter/Spring and March 15 for Summer/Fall.

III. Post-Doctoral Fellowships

·         Post-Doctoral Fellowships in Chinese Studies. Each award carries a 12-month stipend. U.S. citizenship is not required. For more information, click here. Deadline: January 15.

IV. Awards for Faculty

·         Center for East Asian Studies Faculty Grants. Small grants (up to $500) and large grants (upto $5000) are available for regular Stanford faculty in East Asian Studies for research projects on China, Japan, and Korea. ·         East Asian Collection, Stanford University Research Grants. Four grants every year up to $500 each are given to faculty members outside the Bay Area to visit Stanford to use the East Asian collection for their research. Fellowships Offered by Other Institutions on Campus

The Institute for International Studies and the Asia/Pacific Research Center also offer fellowships for graduate students in East Asian studies.

Part-time work related to East Asia may be available from the Asia/Pacific Research Center, the Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education, or the Institute for International Studies.
