Call for Papers: Transcultural and Multiethnic special issue

The Stanford Journal of Asian American Studies is an online journal featuring excellence in the field of Asian American Studies. We are currently accepting submissions for the Transcultural and Multiethnic special issue.

Papers may be submitted by undergraduate or graduate students of any year or major. In addition to original research papers, we will consider essays, short fiction, poems, or visual art. Deadlines are May 15, 2009 for Letter of Intent and June 30, 2009 for Manuscript/Artwork Submissions. Download the submission application (doc) for more information.

The definition of Asian American Cinema is as difficult to pin down as the term Asian America is itself, a term popularized by Japanese American political activist Yuji Ichioka in the 1960s. Used originally to unify the political interests of Asians living in the United States, the term “Asian America” has since been used in a myriad of other contexts, such as race studies, cultural studies, and art history. However, upon closer inspection in the field of contemporary cinema, the term seems to run into enormous complications, often failing to differentiate between the highly varied experiences of Asian filmmakers living in the United States...
