Edward J. Zander
President and Chief Operating Officer, Sun Microsystems, Inc.
As President and Chief Operating Officer at Sun Microsystems, Ed Zander holds the responsibility for executing Sun's global vision of being the number one supplier of products, technologies and services for enabling the Net Economy.
Zander runs the company's day-to-day business operations, including: System Products; Storage Products; Software Products and Platforms; Enterprise Services; iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions; Global Sales Operations; worldwide manufacturing and purchasing; research and development, including the Office of the CTO; customer advocacy; and worldwide marketing.
In May of 2000, Business Week named Zander to its list of the top 25 "masters of the web world." In an earlier profile, the magazine described him as "one of the most feared, respected and well-liked executives in computerdom who has transformed Sun into the leading producer of high-powered computers."
Zander, 54, assumed his current post in January 1998, bringing along a unique set of skills and expertise acquired over more than 25 years in the computer business, including extensive experience in engineering, marketing and executive management.
In his previous position at Sun, Zander served as president of Sun Microsystems Computer Company (SMCC), running the multi-billion dollar network computing systems organization and managing all aspects of development, manufacturing and marketing.
Prior to SMCC, as president of Sun's software group, Zander initiated a successful effort to develop and market Solaris into the UNIX industry's highest-volume licensed software environment for enterprise and network computing applications and the software backbone for much of today's Internet. In this position, he also led the company's network management, PC integration and software product suites.
Zander joined Sun in October 1987 as vice president of corporate marketing, handling the development of global product and merchandising strategies for the company's hardware and software products.
Zander came to Sun from Apollo Computer, where he was vice president of marketing, developing Apollo's marketing strategy for the emerging workstation industry. Before joining Apollo in 1982, Zander spent nine years at Data General in several senior marketing management positions.
Zander earned a BSEE from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York, and an MBA from Boston University. He serves on the Boards of Directors of the Jason Foundation for Education, Portal Software, Inc., Multilink Technology Corporation, and the Science Advisory Board of RPI.
