Homework

There will be weekly, required homework assignments. Due dates are shown on the course schedule. You may work together on these, but each student has to turn in an individual solution though keep in mind that you will not be allowed to collaborate on the exam questions. Experience has shown that those students who understand and solve homework questions get high scores from our in-class exams. For on campus students, homework is due at the beginning of class.

Case Assignments

For classes with case assignments, each student group (three students) will turn in a maximum of 2-3 pages write-up describing their solutions. Students (except SCPD students) must be prepared to summarize the case and to suggest a solution in class. Be prepared to stand up and present your solution in front of the class using 1-2 pages of summary.

Reading Assignments

The reading assignments will help you to better understand the material covered in class. There may be random pop quizzes promptly at 11:00 am at random, to evaluate whether you have completed your reading assignment. Late quizzes and/or absences count as zero. These quizzes will be used as a bonus. The instructor may decide to increase the letter grade of a boarder case student, say from A- to A based on his/her performance on these quizzes. [There will not be any quizzes for the SCPD students]

Handouts

There will be a class handout for each lecture summarizing the main points to be covered. All handouts will be posted on the course website. The section for “Handouts”can be viewed after logging in with your Stanford ID and password. We recommend you print and bring hard copy of the lecture notes to each class to facilitate taking notes.

Project

There will be two take-home projects that will give you an opportunity to apply what you have learned to a real-world problem. The due dates are shown on the class schedule. You may work together on the project in groups of three people, turning in one project report with all three of your names on it.

Only on campus students can substitute the following for one project: Build a "Just-in-time game" and prepare a 30-minute demonstration that shows the advantages of just-in-time systems over more conventional systems.

Groups

You will work in groups of 3 people on the project and on the preparation of the cases. Please email Karen Zheng (yczheng@stanford.edu) and tell which group you would like to belong to (one email per group). If you are unable to find a group by September 28, we will assign you to a group.

SCPD students can be part of an on campus student group. If you chose to do this, it will be the group’s responsibility to coordinate necessary activities. We encourage local SCPD students to meet on campus students.

Exams

There will be one in-class, closed-book midterm and a final exam. For the midterm you can bring one double-sided sheet of notes, for the final you can bring two double-sided sheets of notes.

Grading

Final Exam (in class) 40%
Midterm (in class) 20%
Projects 20%
Homework 10%
Case Write-ups and Class Participation 10%

Those students who are using the course to fulfill a core requirement must take this course for a letter grade. Others may elect the pass/no credit grading option by completing the appropriate forms that can be obtained from the MS&E Department Student Administrator, Lori Cottle

Deadlines

We will not accept any late homework or any late project. For your final grade, we will consider only the seven homework assignments (out of 8) with the highest scores.

If you are unable to attend one of the exam days, a written explanation and arrangements must be made by the second week of class. Otherwise, we will not offer any alternative times for the scheduled final examination, so please do not schedule your Christmas break travel to conflict with this examination.

SCPD students

In general, you can send your homework solutions to SCPD via fax but you can also e-mail your homework solutions to the TA before the deadline each week. Deadlines for homework assignments are 11:00 am PST the day they are due. Class participation and quizzes will not be counted towards your final grade. Instead we will proportionately increase the other weights.

Your exams will be sent to your examination monitor; you must take each exam on the designated date, not earlier or later. Exams not taken on the designated day will count zero, unless permission has been obtained from the instructor. Each SCPD student must fill out an exam monitor form each quarter and submit a new one to SCPD should any information change prior to the exams. The URL for the form is

http://scpd.stanford.edu/scpd/enrollInfo/policy/proctors/monitor.asp.

You should NOT email complete examinations to the TA. You should give your completed exam to your monitor, who will return to us for grading. SCPD students who are local (near Stanford) may also elect to come to the campus for exams by noting this preference on the Exam Monitor Form.
