1. What is the difference between MS&E 193 and MS&E 293 in terms of course assignments and requirements?

Students signed up for either 193 or 293 will write a policy paper that includes, at a minimum, a baseline quantitative analysis in the form of a decision tree. Graduate students taking MS&E 293 will need to incorporate sensitivity analysis into their paper in addition to the decision tree. Not surprisingly, we expect a more detailed analysis from graduate students than undergraduate students. There will be a tutorial on creating decision trees later in the quarter. Students are highly encouraged to meet with course TAs for one-on-one help if needed (TA office hours will be posted later in the quarter).

2. What is the difference between WIM and non-WIM requirements?

The assignments and requirements for both WIM and non-WIM students are the same. Everyone will be required to re-write their first draft of the policy paper. However, when grading WIM papers, additional emphasis and attention to detail will be given to writing skills, including but not limited to such aspects as structure, grammar, style, clarity, and punctuation. For more on WIM, visit http://wim.stanford.edu.

Current undergrad and graduate students:
(This is a temporary solution while SCPD is working out the bugs in their system. Eventually there will be another portal for you to view lectures without going this route)

b. Go to https://myvideosu.stanford.edu
c. Scroll down to the Management Science and Engineering section and select “Technology and National Security”
d. Select whatever lecture you want to view

If you have problems accessing videos or any other technical difficulties, please contact the SCPD help desk at tech-support@scpdinfo.stanford.edu or call 650-725-3016 for help.

4. I’ve heard that lectures from previous years were broadcast on campus TV? Is this still true?

No. The only way to access the lectures now is on-line and only students enrolled in the course are allowed access.

5. I do not have access to any decision analysis software, is there a place I can get software to perform decision analysis to help with the policy paper ?

Students that do not have access to other forms of decision tree software can go to http://www.treeplan.com for a trial use. Please comply with their legal restrictions, and ensure you thoroughly read the user guide prior to making your decision tree. Most, if not all, questions regarding the decision tree can be answered via the user guide.
