Midway Report

Like the design notebooks, the reports are cumulative. In other words, the final report that you submit will include material (possibly revised) that you turned in during the first review. Also like the notebooks, the reports are a documentation of your design and of the process you use to generate the design.

Midway report - due Thursday, April 30th at 5pm
Please submit one printed copy. The printed copy can go in the plastic tray outside 521 Terman (Ken waldron's office). An electronic copy should be put in the course work drop box as you did for assignment 1.
Reports should contain revised material from the Project Plan and Functional Specification, including:

  1. A more polished version of the design requirements
  2. Project definition, justification, motivation (sell your idea to a skeptic)
  3. Timetable and current status.

In addition, the first report should contain:

  1. Layout drawing(s) and/or sketches of several alternate possibilities for each component that you will design in detail (these could involve different geometries, materials, fabrication processes or mechanisms). See format notes on the next page for more details on the drawings.
  2. Sources of information for completing the design (literature, experts, testing plans, product info...). This should be enhanced from the Project Plan and Functional Specification. Show how you are getting to know the field.
  3. Calculations and decisions on human factors, weight or energy requirements, and other considerations as appropriate
  4. Sizing calculations
  5. Results of preliminary proof-of-concept tests and plans for future tests
  6. Material selection and manufacturing considerations

An appendix can contain information you would like to share but doesn't fit the main flow of your report, For example, other ideas created in brainstorming or ideas rejected based on more information or calculations etc.
