Case study in relevance: 29 Range Rover

At the beginning of Unit 2, we discussed what the Text part of this advertisement really means:

Work hard. And if you do, you will Be successful. And if you are successful you can buy a Range Rover. And then you can Go in it to someplace where none of that matters.

 

 

The issue of relevance comes in here in identifying the "someplace where none of that matters". This place is the deserted, quiet location showed in the Image components of the advertisement. Simply, the Image must be taken as relevant to the Text (or vice versa), and the interpretation of the whole follows this requirement. Relevance also provides the means by which you get there---using a Range Rover.

Compare this with the same Text on an Image of three young people "in motion".
