Doree Allen Director, Oral Communication Program, Center for Teaching and Learning

Dr. Allen is the coordinator for CTL’s interdisciplinary program in Oral Communication where she teaches a variety of courses on public speaking and oral interpretation.  Her research interest lies in the poetics of performed texts. She received both her MA and Ph.D. in English from Stanford and taught for several years in Stanford’s Cultures, Ideas, and Values Program.


Janet Martinez Director, Gould Negotiation and Mediation Program, Law School

Dr. Martinez focuses her research and consulting on negotiation, facilitation, and consensus-building.  As director of the Law School’s Gould Negotiation and Mediation Program, a consultant for the Consensus Building Institute in Cambridge, MA, and a consultant for the mediation consulting firm Lax Sebenuis, she has extensive expertise in developing negotiation curriculum for the private and public sector.  Dr. Martinez received her J.D. from Golden Gate University, her M.P.A. from Harvard University, and her Ph.D. from MIT.


Thom Massey Director,Center for Mediation and Communication; Student Affairs Officer

Dean Massey  has served in many roles at Stanford as Associate Dean of Students, Assistant Director of the Graduate Life Office, and Associate Dean of Cultural and Diversity Education.  He is currently working to expand Center for Communication and Mediation on campus, which leads mediations and trains student mediators.  His goal is to make Stanford students better “world citizens.” Dean Massey has his M.A. in Administration Policy Analysis in Education from Stanford.


Susan McConnell Susan B. Ford Professor in Biological Sciences

Dr. McConnell’s research focus is on the development of the cerebral cortex.  She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a McKnight Investigator, a Terman Fellow, and is generally recognized for her exceptional dedication to the education of graduate students.  Dr. McConnell received her Ph.D. in Neurobiology from Harvard University.


Jessica Notini Lecturer, Gould Negotiation and Mediation Program, Law School

Ms. Notini is a full-time mediator and facilitator and teaches a variety of subjects related to communication, negotiation and conflict resolution both in California and internationally. Prior to her work in the field of alternative dispute resolution, she practiced environmental law.  Ms. Notini is a core trainer for the Northern California Mediation Center, an Adjunct Professor at Boalt Law School, Hastings School of Law, Golden Gate University and John F. Kennedy University, and she teaches courses in Spain, Peru, Equador and Mexico.  She received her J.D. from the University of Michigan where she was awarded the Order of the Coif.


David Rasch University Ombuds

Dr. Rasch has been the University Ombuds at Stanford since May of 2004. He is a psychologist and prior to serving as Ombuds he was Director of the Stanford Help Center, a counseling service for faculty and staff, where he worked since 1985. Dr. Rasch has consulted, written and lectured on a variety of issues related to organizational and interpersonal dynamics within academic institutions. Dr. Rasch received his Masters from the Naropa Institute and Ph.D. from the California Institute of Integral Studies.


Terry Root Professor, Biological Sciences; Senior Fellow, Woods Institute

Dr. Root’s research focus is on large-scale ecological questions examining the abundance of plants and animals.  She has been awarded the Presidential Young Investigators Award, the Conservation Achievement Award, and the Banksia International Award among others for her work on conservation.  She is also lead author on the 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.  Dr. Root received her Ph.D. in Biology from Princeton University.


Stephen Schneider Melvin and Joan Lane Professor for Interdiciplinary Environmental Studies; Senior Fellow, Woods Institute

Dr. Schneider’s research focus is on global warming and the ecological and economic of climate change.  He is co-director of the Center for Environmental Sciences and Policy and has served as a federal consultant during the Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Bush Sr., Clinton, and Bush Jr. administrations. He has been honored with a MacArthur Fellowship and the American Association for the Advancement of Science/Westinghouse Award for Public Understanding of Science and Technology.  Dr. Schneider received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and Plasma Physics from Columbia University.
