PREVENTION & PUBLIC HEALTH

There are fewer than twenty confirmed cases of Dioctophyme renale infection in humans, making large-scale public health measures unnecessary (8).

However, almost all reported cases of Dioctophyme renale infections in humans have followed the consumption of improperly cooked, freshwater fish. By advising travelers to avoid undercooked fish – which is not such a terrible suggestion even outside the context of D. renale – transmission of this disease to humans could be eliminated.
