TRANSMISSION

The mode of transmission of B. hominis is unknown, though it is thought to be fecal-oral (Amin; Yakoob). Many authors have also suggested that contaminated water may be a source of infection, and elevated B. hominis levels have been found among individuals who have ingested untreated water during their travels and who subsequently experience “traveler’s diarrhea” (Leelayoova).

In addition, the asymptomatic carrier state of B. hominis has been well documented both in children and adults (Zierdt). It has also been found in animals including pigs, monkeys, poultry, and rodents (Yakoob).
