Cyclosporiensis,
(sigh-clo-spore-EYE-uhn-sis)
Cyclospora cayentanensis,
a coccidian parasite, has a short recorded history. It was first reported in humans by a British parasitologist
working in Papua New Guinea in 1979.
In the last twenty years, there have been an increasing number of
cyclopora outbreaks in North America due to increased imports of fruits and
vegetables, better diagnostic techniques and reporting. Cyclospora is still considered an emerging
infectious disease and continuing research will reveal many of the questions
that remain about this new protozoan parasite. |
