Since man is a dead-end host to Dirofilaria worms and not subject to microfilaremia, treatment is unnecessary.  Identified nodules are surgically removed.  Since microfilaremia is not seen in human dirofilariasis, the drugs used to treat other filarial infections, such as diethylcarbamazine (DEC) and ivermectin, are not used.
