Welcome to this edition of  Perspectives,
the e-newsletter of the Stanford course,
Perspectives in Assistive Technology.
This issue invites you to attend the Mid-term Student Team Project Presentations.

What is the course? - Perspectives in Assistive Technology is a Winter Quarter course at Stanford that explores the design, development, and use of assistive technology benefitting people with disabilities and older adults. Much more information can be found on the course website. Student enrollment in the course is 44.

Invitation to attend - You are invited to attend all class lectures. They will be held in the Thornton Center - Classroom 110 on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 4:15 to 5:30pm and are free and open to the public.

Abstract: Student teams have chosen a problem experienced by individuals with disabilities and have been working to research, brainstorm, design, fabricate, and test a prototype device or software to meet an identified need.

Project: Investigate and develop new educational activities appropriate for children with disabilities. This may include mechanical and/or computer software solutions that will provide interactive access for these learners.

Project: Design a cleat / pedal system that will allow use of a running prosthesis during the bike portion of a triathlon. This will allow for faster and safer transitioning from the bike to the run portion and eliminates the need for a sport-specific prosthesis. The cleat system must be easily attached and detached from the running prosthesis to allow running without interference. The pedal system must be stable enough to allow standing up while cycling, but allow adequate degrees of freedom to transition from sit to stand.
